Focus Swarm — Multiple Object Tracking Game
Focus Swarm is a free online multiple object tracking (MOT) game grounded in cognitive science. Watch 3 target spheres flash, then track them through a Boids flocking swarm of identical distractors for 10 seconds. Can you identify them at the end?
The game tests visual attention, working memory, and attentional tracking capacity — the same cognitive skills studied by researchers since Pylyshyn & Storm (1988).

The Science
MOT tasks reveal the limits of human attention. The brain uses spatial indexing (FINST theory) to track moving objects without verbal labels. Most people can track 3–4 objects simultaneously — higher-level training can extend this limit.
Difficulty Levels
- Level 1: 12 spheres, normal speed — ideal for beginners
- Level 2: 16 spheres, faster movement — intermediate challenge
- Level 3: 20 spheres, chaotic speed — expert difficulty
